Why Mekomot Slovakia?
The Meaning Behind the Name
The word “Mekomot” (Heb. מקומות) means “places.”
In Hebrew, it is the plural form of “Makom” (מקום) – meaning “place.”
However, in Jewish tradition, Makom carries a deeper significance. It refers not only to a physical location but also to a sacred space — one connected to memory, presence, and spiritual meaning.
Mekomot Slovakia , therefore, symbolically stands for “places of memory in Slovakia” – spaces that deserve attention, respect, and care.
The name reflects our mission:
to preserve, restore, and document Jewish sites—cemeteries, memorials, and locations connected to the history of Jewish communities across Slovakia.
These are not just stones, but witnesses of life, families, and communities that were once an integral part of our towns and villages.
Each of these places has its own story — and we strive to ensure that it will not be forgotten.
Our Story
Since 2025, Mekomot Slovakia has been working to safeguard Jewish heritage across Slovakia — restoring cemeteries and documenting their stories, so that these places of memory remain alive for generations to come.
Our Mission and Values
Preserving the past for the future.
Our vision is a Slovakia where Jewish cemeteries are preserved with dignity, respected as part of the nation’s heritage, and accessible as places of memory, learning, and cultural dialogue.
We believe in respect – for the memory of the deceased and the sanctity of cemeteries.
We build on community – through cooperation with volunteers, municipalities, and partners.
We promote education by raising awareness of Jewish history and cultural heritage.
And we uphold responsibility – a long-term commitment to the care, protection, and preservation of these sacred places for future generations.
