Shemot: Voices of the Lost Citizens of Levoča

15 October 2026

The word Shemot means “names” in Hebrew. It reminds us of our deepest moral obligation – to remember. Every name read aloud represents a specific human life, destroyed by the tragic events of the Holocaust.

The aim of this commemorative event is to restore the identities and dignity of the victims from our town. During the gathering, we will collectively read the names of the Jewish men, women, and children from Levoča who never returned to their homes. The event also has an important educational dimension, and the programme is adapted for primary and secondary school pupils to ensure that the memory of these events is preserved for future generations.

Reviving the Memory of a Lost Community

The word Kehila (קְהִילָה) translates from Hebrew as a community, congregation, or assembly. This is exactly what our exhibition is about – restoring faces, names, and stories to the Jewish community that once formed an integral and vibrant part of Levoča’s history, yet almost completely disappeared as a result of the tragic events of the 20th century.

Connecting the past and the present

This exhibition is closely linked to the core mission of the Mekomot Slovakia civic association – the restoration and preservation of the Jewish cemetery in Levoča. While the cemetery represents a silent resting place and a tangible memorial in the landscape, the exhibition sheds light on the lives of those who rest there. It shows us that they were not merely names carved into stone, but real people whose legacy we must not forget.

Dr. Gustáv Löwy

25 september 2026

The legacy of Rabbi Löwy, much like the fates of many other members of the community at that time, was unjustly suppressed and forgotten for many decades. By unveiling his plaque, we not only restore his place of honour in the historical memory of our town, but we also commemorate the profound spiritual and cultural heritage left behind by this community.
